BEYOND INDIVIDUAL BIBLE VERSES: THE IMPORTANCE OF STUDYING WHOLE BOOKS OF THE BIBLE
The art and skill of identifying Bible verses that address a particular subject and bringing them together into a powerful sermon or teaching is valuable. This method, commonly known as topical preaching or teaching, has greatly benefited believers, and for many, it is the main method of Bible teaching they have encountered.
However, care must be taken lest believers miss important truths, explanations, historical contexts, and other details contained in the entire books from which those verses are drawn.
The Bible was not originally written as a collection of isolated verses, but as complete books, letters, historical accounts, prophecies, and teachings. Understanding the whole message of a book helps us interpret individual verses more accurately and appreciate God's Word more fully.
For this reason, believers should deliberately create time to read and study entire books of the Bible, particularly the four Gospels, the Pauline Epistles, Hebrews, and other books of Scripture.
Pastors and church leaders should also develop the knowledge and skills necessary for expository preaching and teaching through entire books of the Bible, explaining passages in their proper context and showing how the different sections contribute to the overall message.
The Apostle Paul instructed Timothy:
2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV): "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
It would be wise for every believer and congregation to aim at reading and studying several complete books of the Bible within each year.
Topical preaching helps us understand what the Bible teaches about particular subjects, while whole-book exposition helps us understand those subjects within the broader message of Scripture. Both methods are valuable and should complement one another.
Our goal should not merely be to know many Bible verses, but to understand the Word of God faithfully and apply it correctly in our daily lives.
