SHOULD A BELIEVER JOIN DEMONSTRATIONS?
SHOULD A BELIEVER JOIN IN DEMONSTRATIONS?
The Bible does not explicitly address protests. It does however, call Christians to speak out against injustice and stand up for the oppressed.
The believer should assess if the reasons for the protests are Biblical. Peaceful means and diplomatic efforts should have been explored first . The believer should also not be forced or bribed into demonstrations.
When the demonstrations are against the governing authorities, there should be a clear separation of the wrongs done and the individual leader. Believers are to respect the leaders in authority. They can change and do the right thing or they can be made to step aside through legal means provided so other competent persons can step in and deliver. They should also seek and promoting peace. Therefore, Christians should carefully evaluate the specific demonstration, its goals, and methods, ensuring it aligns with their faith and doesn't contradict biblical principles.
Reasons why a Christian might join a demonstration:
Standing up for justice:
The Bible calls Christians to defend the vulnerable and speak out against oppression. If a demonstration is aimed at addressing a clear injustice, a Christian might feel compelled to participate, especially if peaceful and non-violent.
Love for neighbor:
Demonstrations can be a way to show love and solidarity with those who are marginalized or suffering.
Seeking positive change:
Some demonstrations are designed to bring about positive social or political change, and a Christian might see this as a way to contribute to a better world
Honoring the Higher Law and calling:
There are times when higher laws (God's laws) take precedence.
• Believers cannot surrender the matters of governance to non-believers alone. They should however do it guided by the Word of God.
• Remember you can do so much advocacy, and bring so much change these days in social media , individually, by creating groups and pages or joining those advocating.
ONCE THE BELIEVERS HAVE DECIDED IT IS DEMONSTRATIONS,
• They should be peaceful and respectful. When mixed with nonbelievers, they need to be a voice within the multitude that is drawing the attention of the other demonstrators to this principle. If more and more believers become part of demonstrations, then it's possible with time to win others to do it right, with great positive results.
• Believers should not hurt a person, steal, break into shops or destroy property. If believers decides to join their peers, they should keep on reminding them to uphold this principle.
IF YOU DECIDE TO JOIN DEMONSTRATIONS, BE WARNED:
THAT demonstrations can sometimes, and in Africa especially, they do easily escalate into violence or disorder, which is generally not in line with Christian values. Christians should be cautious about participating in events that could lead to harm or destruction.
• Consider the cause: Is the cause just and aligned with biblical principles?
• Consider Methods used. Are the methods peaceful and non-violent?
Consider personal convictions: Does participating in the demonstration align with your personal convictions and and faith?
Consider Risk: What are the potential risks and benefits of participating?
Decide prayerfully: Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to join a demonstration should be made with prayer and guidance from the Holy Spirit.
Examples of Christian involvement in social justice:
Martin Luther King Jr.: Led peaceful protests against racial segregation in the US.
The Quakers: Historically involved in social justice movements, advocating for peace and equality.
Modern-day activism: Many Christians are involved in various social justice causes.
In conclusion, there is no single answer to the question of whether a Christian should join a demonstration. It's a matter of individual discernment, careful consideration of the specific context, and prayerful seeking of God's guidance.
Guiding verses:
Micah 6:8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Proverbs 31:8 Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.
Proverbs 31:9 Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.
